Tholos AI vs cloud AI: why offline?
If you already use a cloud AI assistant — ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, or one of their “enterprise” tiers — the obvious question is: they promise not to train on my data, so why do I need an offline tool? It’s a fair question, and this article answers it honestly, including when a cloud assistant is the better choice.
A promise is not the same as an architecture
“We won’t look at your data” is a policy. Policies can change with a terms-of-service update, be misconfigured, be breached, or be compelled by a subpoena served on the vendor — and with cloud AI, your document has already left your control to be processed on someone else’s servers. “There is no network path between your data and the outside world” is an architecture: the file never leaves your machine, so there is nothing to leak, retain, subpoena, or misconfigure. That’s the difference Tholos AI is built on — see How Tholos AI keeps your data private.
Side by side
| Cloud AI (incl. enterprise tiers) | Tholos AI | |
|---|---|---|
| Where your data goes | Uploaded to a third party’s servers to be processed | Never leaves your device |
| Works without internet | No | Yes — fully offline, even air-gapped |
| Exposed if the vendor is breached or subpoenaed | Yes — your data sits in their systems | No — there’s nothing on their side |
| Requires trusting a privacy policy | Yes — the guarantee is contractual | No — the guarantee is structural, and you can verify it |
| Needs a data-processing agreement / vendor review | Usually yes | No new external processor to assess |
| Cost model | Recurring per-seat subscription | One-time license per machine |
| Data residency | The vendor’s regions | Your disk |
| Telemetry / usage tracking | Common | None |
When a cloud assistant is the better choice
We’d rather you pick the right tool than oversell ours. Cloud AI is a sensible choice when:
- The material isn’t confidential — public research, brainstorming, marketing copy.
- You want the absolute frontier model for a hard reasoning task and the data sensitivity doesn’t matter.
- You have no capable hardware and don’t want to run a model locally at all.
When Tholos AI wins
- The documents are confidential or regulated — contracts, patient records, financials, HR files, privileged material.
- You need to work offline or air-gapped, or in an environment where uploading client data is simply not allowed.
- You want to avoid recurring per-seat costs and a third-party vendor in your compliance scope.
- You need a privacy guarantee you can demonstrate to IT, compliance, or a client — not just point to a policy page.
